Basic Catering

This course introduces students to some of the basic principles underlying the subject.  Students are presented with subjects such as food hygiene, food preparation and cake decoration. The course consists of the following units:

Food Preparation

The unit will be delivered at either Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 level.  This is dependent on the previous qualification of the students and will build on the knowledge and skills already gained at school.

Food Hygiene – a Practical Approach

Students will work towards the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate with the emphasis of the class being on the practical application of the subject. Achievement of this certificate could improve employability in the Hospitality and Care areas.

Craft Baking and Cake Decorating

This class will allow students to achieve 2 units at Intermediate 1 level and will add an interesting dimension to the Home Economics/ Hospitality subject area. It is felt that this course could also include a small enterprise element which could help raise funds and develop the skills of Working with Others and Problem Solving.

This course has been negotiated for the Castlemilk Schools and will be delivered on outreach.

Entry Requirements

Pupils must have a keen interest in catering and hospitality.
