Course Description

This course is designed to give students the underpinning knowledge and practical leadership skills required to pursue a career in the fitness industry, mainly within leisure centres, and or progress onto Higher Education. The course consists of 30 Higher National credits covering various fitness related subjects.

SCQF Level

7-8

Subjects Include

First year - Nutrition, Gymnasium, Exercise Physiology and Anatomy, Gym Instructor, Exercise with Music, Physical Activity for Children, and Work Experience.

Students also have the opportunity to sit VRQ Level II in Gym Instruction and VRQ Level II in Exercise to Music.

Second year - Swimming Pool Lifeguard, Current Exercise Trends, Applied Nutrition and Health Assessment, Managing Stress, Applied Fitness Testing, Applied Exercise Prescription and Stretch Training.

In addition to providing students with the opportunity to gain their HND in Fitness, Health and Exercise, students will also have the opportunity to sit the SVQ Level 2 in Gym Instructor and VRQ Level 2 in Exercise to Music which will improve their employability. It also provides successful students with the opportunity to progress in to 3rd year of the degree programme in Exercise and Health at the University of the West of Scotland.

Entry Requirements

  • 2 Highers including an English based Higher
  • NQ Sports Coaching.
  • Fitness Experience and/or fitness qualifications.
  • 2 acceptable references required.
  • Entrance exam for those without formal qualifications but with relevant life/ work experience.
  • An interview is part of the selection process.
