Course Description

This one year full-time course is aimed at young people who wish to further develop their skills and progress to supported employment with the help of external agencies. It is an appropriate progression route for those who have completed the 'Learning for Independence' course.

The course is designed to focus on personal and social development and improving practical skills. The emphasis is on core, citizenship and employability skills and students will have the opportunity to participate in supported work placements or tasters if appropriate. Subjects will be certified by either the College or the SQA, usually at SCQF Levels 1 and 2.

Students can apply for financial help in the form of a bursary or EMA and all students on the course are eligible for a concession travel card.

On Fridays students also have the opportunity to take part in leisure activities and mix with students from other courses within the School of Supported Learning.

Cardonald College Glasgow is highly regarded in the field of Supported Learning and the teaching staff in this section is highly experienced. Specialist job coaches who work with college staff will help prepare students for supported employment. All students are assigned a guidance tutor and receive a high level of guidance and support throughout the course. Students are given help with post college choices in consultation with parents/carers and other appropriate agencies.

Additional Support is given at breaks and lunchtime, and the Personal Learning and Support Plan mean that student's learning is tailored to suit their needs and goals.

Each course has an element of choices as well as the core subjects, and students have ongoing extensive use of the community through trips and visits.

Entry Requirements

Completion of an application form and formal interview are part of the entry process.

All applicants must submit a Confidential Report.

The report should be completed by someone who knows the applicant well for eg. a guidance teacher.
