BBC staff go back to college
01 December 2009
Staff from BBC Scotland’s Learning Team went back to college this week as part of an ongoing alliance with Cardonald College Glasgow’s journalism, media and communication department.
The BBC team spent the week observing classes in the department and gave students advice on how to find a route into the competitive broadcasting and media world.
They delivered talks to students about how to find employment with the BBC, what workplace opportunities are available and how the BBC can support students through the learning materials they are developing.
The visit is part of an unique exchange partnership established earlier this year to enable the organisations to share best practice, informing the future content that the BBC makes, while giving teaching staff an insight into BBC developments and training techniques to ensure that graduates are up-to-the-mark.
Another part of the exchange sees staff from Cardonald carrying out work experience at the BBC, to ensure their industry skills are up to date.
Claire Donaghey, Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Communication for Cardonald College Glasgow, added: “It was great to have staff from BBC Scotland join us at the college. It gave the team a chance to see real classroom teaching and experience the dynamic of our students here, which in turn can shape content produced.
“It’s also vitally important for our students to have these opportunities to soak up advice and experience from industry professionals – this first-hand knowledge greatly helps to support the work we are doing with them in the classroom.”
Louise Thornton, Producer for BBC Scotland Learning, added: “BBC Scotland Learning is keen to get closer to its audience and understand the environment in which teachers work in today’s schools and colleges. By working with establishments such as Cardonald College Glasgow, the BBC will give its staff practical experience of working with teachers and students, which will inform the content that the BBC makes. Teaching staff from the College will also come to work in the BBC to gain an insight in how content is produced and to be involved in the generation of future ideas.”
