Cardonald Students in Homecoming Scotland Celebration

09 December 2009

IMG 8315Students from Cardonald College Glasgow staged a fashion show of original designs at the Scottish Qualifications Authority's Scotland and Me - A Celebration event recently in Glasgow.

Following the success of the Revival Fashion Show held in June at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Cardonald students were asked to recreate the event as part of the SQAs Homecoming celebrations.

The SQA has been supporting the Scottish Government's Homecoming Year 2009, including the ‘Scotland and Me' competition, where students at schools, colleges and training providers were asked to submit a creative piece of work inspired by one of the five Homecoming themes.

To showcase the competition entries and SQA qualifications that support Scottish culture and life, SQA hosted the Scotland and Me - A Celebration event on 23rd November in Glasgow. As well as exhibitions, visitors were treated to Scottish themed entertainment including Gaelic music and a fashion show from the College students.

Nineteen students took part in the exhibit, many of them modelling their own creations. Titled ‘Heritage Eccentric,' the designs were inspired by Scottish artefacts and featured Scottish textiles, with Harris Tweed and Johnstons of Elgin providing materials.

Fashion and textiles lecturer Corinne Robinson organised the fashion show. Corinne, a former Cardonald student was also keen to showcase the talents of the College Hairdressing and Beauty students "We are delighted to be working in conjunction with the new Hair and Beauty department at Cardonald. They did an excellent job styling the hair and makeup for the models."

Dr Janet Brown, SQA's Chief Executive, said "We were delighted with the response to our Scotland and Me competition - it really does illustrate the wonderful range of talent we have in Scottish schools, colleges and training organisations. The Celebration event is a great opportunity to showcase some of this work as well as SQA's range of qualifications that support Scottish culture and life."
