Cardonald Goes Global
13 January 2010
Cardonald College Glasgow staged its first ever International Day recently to celebrate cultural diversity and welcome international students to the College.
The international student community at Cardonald has grown over the years and with almost 700 students from over 20 countries now at College, the day was a colourful affair.
The event was organised by HND Communication with Media student Sheila Akomiah and provided a lively platform for local and overseas students and staff to interact and broaden their knowledge of cultures and countries other than their own.
The student space was transformed for the occasion with a display of national flags and costumes. The opening ceremony set the tone as the audience enjoyed live singers from Ghana and DR Congo. A short Asian fashion show followed organised by General Education student Harjah Beg, allowing the audience to admire a range of glamorous Pakistani bridal and casual costumes modelled by Cardonald students. Throughout the afternoon a range of decorated exhibition stands showcased artefacts and national costumes from around the globe including The Gambia, Ghana, Swaziland, Uganda, DR Congo, Poland and Pakistan, Scotland and the work of the Fairtrade Foundation.
Principal Susan Walsh said: "The International Day is an excellent addition to the College calendar as it gives our students and staff the chance to experience different cultures. Sheila Akomiah, the Ghanaian student behind the day, has worked extremely hard organising the event and everyone at Cardonald is very proud of her hard work and determination."
Sheila has expressed gratitude to the International Team, SRC, ESOL and all the students and staff that supported the event. "It all wouldn't have been possible without your input. Thank you all. We are now looking forward to the next International Day in 2010!"
