Cardonald Student Shines at Jewellery Awards

22 April 2010

Jane with the winning designCardonald HND Jewellery student Jane McAlinden has won the Incorporation of Goldsmiths ‘Outstanding Scottish Student Award.'

The prestigious award aims to develop the rich and diverse silversmithing heritage in Scotland and gives a student the opportunity of working to commission as well as designing and making a goblet for the Incorporation.

The competition is open to students who are in third year or upwards at university. However because of the excellent reputation of the faculty, Cardonald was invited to select one student for consideration.

Jane was nominated following a presentation on her design to a panel of Jewellery lecturers at the College. She then put forward her goblet design, images of previous work and a short statement about the piece to the Incorporation.

Jane, pictured above with her design, was stunned at the outcome: "It was a bit of a shock to be honest.  It was great just to represent the College as the standard here is so high. I knew that just being nominated would be good experience. However to win- I can't believe it!

The second year student will receive £2500 to cover the costs of materials and making the goblet which is due for completion in October. She will also be matched with established silversmith, Roger Millar who was the Head of Jewellery & Silversmithing at both Glasgow School of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone and is a visiting lecturer at the College. "I'm really looking forward to working with Roger to create the goblet. He has offered great advice in the past.  I feel I still have a lot to learn and want to keep improving my work."

Jane has also been accepted straight into third year of a degree course at Duncan of Jordanastone in Dundee.  "Jewellery making started off as a hobby. I took a few evening classes at Cardonald which I really enjoyed, but never thought I would end up going to university.  Everyone at the College has been great and I will definitely keep in touch."
