Students to hit the catwalk at Kelvingrove
02 June 2010
Visitors to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June are in for a fashion extravaganza, as students from Cardonald College Glasgow turn the city landmark into a style haven.
Students from the HND Textiles course at Cardonald, aged from 17 to 65, will show off their designs in a series of spectacular catwalk shows in Kelvingrove's main hall throughout the weekend.
First and second year students will take to the catwalk modelling their own creations, showcasing how they have used themes such as Festival, Luxe and Migration to produce printed and embroidered dresses and denim skirts.
On Sunday 13th, visitors will even be able to try their hand at fashion design as the College runs a workshop encouraging the public to get creative with their clothes. Fashion designer, Corinne Robertson, will lead the special class from 1pm-4pm, showing visitors how to customise denim to create cool and quirky fashion items.
Corinne is a former Cardonald College Glasgow student and went on to gain a first class honours degree in fashion at Loughborough University before returning to Glasgow to lecture at the College and run her own accessories label - Dazed Dorothy.
Jacqueline Farrell, programme leader for HND Fashion Textiles at Cardonald College Glasgow, said: "Most of the HND students will be moving on to advanced level university courses in Scotland and England after the summer, so this is a great chance for the public to get a sneak preview of what could be the next Scottish fashion phenomenon.
"The students have worked extremely hard all year to develop drawings, colour palettes, textiles and garment shapes for a broad range of markets and the items they have produced are really impressive. It's fantastic that they get to show them off in such a dramatic and prestigious location.
"The workshop is a great opportunity for visitors to explore their creative side - whether they're new to design or already have a flair for fashion. We're really looking forward to this interactive part of the weekend and hopefully that the catwalk shows will provide inspiration for some fantastic pieces designed by the public."
Catwalk shows will take place at 2pm and 3pm on Saturday 12th June and 1pm and 2pm on Sunday 13th June. Hair and makeup will be by June Long, whose daughter is one of the students taking part.
A static show of even more of the talented students' work will be on display in the education suite corridor at Kelvingrove from Tuesday 8th June.
