Cardonald Student Heads to the World Cup

03 June 2010

Cardonald student Heather Winship is representing Scotland at the World Cup in South Africa. The HND Television student will manage the FIFA Fan Fest at Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth.

Heather, who moved to Scotland from South Africa 15 years ago, got in touch with a former colleague through Facebook last week. Three days later she had a unique job offer and booked her flight to South Africa.

Heather explains: "I previously worked with Magnetic Storm, an events company based in Port Elizabeth. My former manager, Dave Limbert found me on Facebook last Monday. I haven't seen him in nine years! He was looking for an Events Manager for the Fan Fest. I said I was free and he offered me the job. I couldn't believe it and thought he was joking. But it was a genuine offer, so I said yes, booked my flight and am heading to South Africa on Thursday."

"I haven't been back to South Africa in four years. Not only is this a great opportunity to be part of such a prestigious event, but I will also be able to see many of my old friends and family."

Heather will manage events at Fan Fest in St George's Park stadium, where 30,000 football fans are expected to attend each day of the tournament. Games will be broadcast live on big screens with pre- and post-match entertainment showcasing South African talent.

Heather has just completed her HND at Cardonald will return to Glasgow after the World Cup ends.
