Shanghai-based company offer work placement to Cardonald student
19 June 2012
Students from Cardonald College Glasgow's HND Fashion Textiles course had the opportunity to experience the world of international soft furnishings when they were given a live brief by international soft furnishing company HomeX.
The students were asked to produce a printed fabric sample that could be used to produce curtains and cushions for the company's UK market. The designs were judged by HomeX Managing Director, Rubin Lou and head designer and former Cardonald student, Victoria Whitehead. The overall winner was offered a week-long work placement with the Shanghai-based company.
Rubin Lou, Managing Director of HomeX, said: "The design standard was very high and it was interesting to see how each of the students had interpreted the brief, which was ‘Pure and Simple'. Each of the samples was hand screen printed and I was particularly impressed with the students' skills in this area."
Lesley Anne Dunn was selected as the overall winner, with Robyn Munro named the runner up. The judges agreed that Lesley Anne's design of a flower was the most original and creative of the 40 entrants, while Robyn's was considered to be the most commercially accessible design.
Commenting, Lesley Anne said: "As a class we visited John Lewis and Debenhams, who both stock HomeX fabrics, to do research into buyer habits and tastes. We discovered that people like bold floral prints so I decided to use my love of gardening and my passion was flowers and plants as inspiration.
"My design used a neutral colour palette that would work well printed on either silk or cotton fabric. I was delighted that the judges liked my design and can't wait for my work placement."
