Laboratory Science - Intermediate 2

The course provides a general introduction to laboratory science. Pupils will explore a variety and range of industries and services and the career opportunities - in science laboratories – in a local, national and global setting. Pupils will have the opportunity to develop the basic practical skills for working in a laboratory – measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions and to understand and implement the health and safety requirements for a safe working environment. The specific practical skills related to microbiology, measuring radioactivity, chemical handling and laboratory instrumentation are developed. Pupils will work with others to produce a plan to undertake a practical investigation to test scientific hypotheses related to a scientific topic. This will also involve reporting of the results, conclusions and evaluations of the investigation.

This Course consists of four 40 hour mandatory Units.

Entry requirements
It is envisaged that pupils will be working towards Standard Grade at General, Credit or Intermediate 2 at level C or better in English, Mathematics and at least 1 Science subject at the commencement of the course.

Attendance pattern
The course could be carried out one session (2.5 hours) per week over two years preferably commencing in S3 or could be delivered two sessions (5 hours) per week over one year, possibly in S5 or S6.  

Preferred option is Wednesday from 1.30pm – 4pm over over session.
