David McGurn - Lecturer & Goal keeper

18 Feb 2009

David currently works at the College as a part-time NQ Sports coaching coordinator and a part-time sport and fitness lecturer. In addition, David is a Culture & Sport Glasgow activity coach, Glasgow football section coach and an SFA goalkeeping coach.

Commenting, David said: “The opportunity to play full-time football was a great experience. It was a fantastic job to train and play football everyday for six years. As training finished at about 12pm or 1pm, I could continue my coaching jobs in sports clubs, primary and secondary schools with the greater Pollok area.

“There were a good few reasons why I came out of full-time football. First, I needed a fresh challenge. I was at Greenock Morton for six years and felt it was going a bit stale. Second, I was 27 when I signed for Raith Rovers FC, I wanted to make a start on establishing my career outside of football for when I finish playing.

“Working in the sports section in a great job, we have fantastic staff which is a pleasure to work along side and learn off each other.  In the sports section, like any football team, we all have to pull together and work as team, which means the students get the best learning experience available.

“My personal drive and vision is to teach students to become good leaders and excellent coaches, and to show them they can succeed in the sports coaching or teaching industries if they are ambitions and put in 100% at all times.

“Playing part-time football takes a while for your body to adjust.  Although I’m only training on a Tuesday and Thursday night it does take its toll.  After spending all day in college teaching, I need to drive through to Kirkcaldy to start training at 7pm and finish at 9pm. After training we always have a match analysis from the previous Saturday’s game, which means I normally get home around 10:30pm.

“I am not complaining as I love teaching sports and teaching students to become better individuals and good coaches, as well as playing football and coaching every other night. It’s a great job which hopefully can continue to get better.”
